One of the biggest achievements any basketball player can get is scoring 1,000 points for their team. This requires the player to put in time and effort, and for them to have been starting for most of their high school career. Junior Ben Bryson has been working toward this goal for three years and finally achieved it in West’s win against North Henderson on Friday, Jan. 4.
“It felt good because it was my goal this year and for my entire varsity career,” Bryson said. “It was really that feeling of achieving my ultimate goal.”
Head Coach Joey Bryson holds his own records at West and, according to Ben, has tried to instill that competitive nature in his son. It has even sparked some competition inside the home.
“My dad has helped me a lot by being hard on me when I need it and pushing me to be my best. Without him I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Bryson said. “I also always try to beat my dad’s records and I’m on track right now.”
Bryson has been starting on the basketball team for three years now and has already sparked interest from Division I college programs.
“The next goal for me is to get signed with a college,” Bryson said. “Tennessee Tech is at the top of the list right now, but they are most of the list too. I’m hoping to get a few more soon.”
Even with this highlight under Bryson’s belt, he said main focus rests on the goals that he set collectively with his team at the beginning of the season.
“As a team we still want to make it to the playoffs,” Bryson said. “I don’t think anyone on the team has ever been to the playoffs and we all want to know how that feels.”
