In 2024, three West Henderson High School senior softball players committed to be Division I and II athletes. This is an amazing accomplishment for these athletes because they have earned a scholarship to college to continue their softball careers. Less than 5 percent of total students who play softball in high school end up as Division I or II athletes.
Overall, the West Henderson varsity softball team is ranked 85 out of all 981 NC varsity teams. Last year, the girls became conference champions and won the Mountain-seven 3A Conference 11-1. In May of 2024, the girls went on a streak of 12 straight home wins.
One of the senior athletes to sign on a Division II scholarship is Haley Littrell. She committed to Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. When being interviewed, Littrell was asked what her favorite part about softball was, and she answered, “Getting the opportunity to meet people from all around and making friends with people I never thought I would be able to.” The girls on the softball team have an unbreakable bond. With all the ups and downs they have been through, they bonded and built strong relationships. Littrell looks forward to bonding more with her fellow teammates this season. Littrell said, “We’re doing a lot more team bonding activities which will make games and bus rides hopefully more fun.”
It is an honor to be able to sign on a Division I or II scholarship. Littrell and the other girls worked very hard to be in the position that they are in now. They have lost games and won games but they have learned from their mistakes and worked their way up to be the athletes they are. These Falcons have a short amount of time at West Henderson left, but all of West has confidence that they will finish the year strong and lead the team to victories, while leaving their legacy behind to encourage the new players on the team.
