As an athlete, you always want to be strong and healthy. West Henderson’s after-school program, called Speed School, could help you do just that. Led by Coach Tyler Arrowood, this program trains students who are willing to put in the work to become better athletes. The program helps athletes by introducing plyometrics to basic speed drills and improving joint mobility for explosiveness. These workouts also include isometric and dynamic movements like resistance training, parachutes, pull aways, and bands. Arrowood speaks on helping student-athletes, stating, “We started Speed School in order to give student-athletes an opportunity outside of school hours in order to improve technique on 40-yard dashes, shuttle times, verticals, broad jumps, and just overall speed and quickness performance.” These workouts are open for all West Hendersons student-athletes that are in their off-season. Although these workouts are only on Monday and Saturday afternoons, they are filled with hours of good information for whatever sport you play. Arrowood originally started this program in 2014 while coaching at Hendersonville Middle School and has been trying to implement this supplemental program every year in the spring since. Even after it was shut down for a few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is still very popular and bounced back stronger than ever. Speed School takes place in the spring and occurs every Saturday at 9:00 in the morning.
