In past years, student government was a club at West Henderson. Students would meet about once a week to try and plan out big events such as pep rallies, dances, and other school events. This left a lot of stress on leaders around the school, as they only had 30 minutes a week to work things out as a group. Student leaders and teachers both decided that it was time for a change, and with that came West Hendersons leadership class.

West Hendersons leadership class is built of kids who the student body voted to represent them during the previous years’ election. The class is filled with students from all grades who are all assigned different tasks to help make West Henderson a better and more fun environment. As mentioned before, the main goal of the leadership class was to give the student government more time to plan out fun events to get the school involved and excited, and so far it has done just that. West has had two pep rallies so far this year, both being huge successes. West even introduced a new tradition in the “Spirit Stick” at the most recent pep rally. “I think the spirit stick helps create a greater sense of pride and cause people to want to participate in the pep rallies more because everyone loves a competition,” Student Body President Jesse Jakubielski said. Another big tradition that the Student Government was able to bring back was the Powder Puff game; powder puff consisted of girls from every grade coming together to play a big football game. The game was a huge success and brought a lot of energy to this year’s homecoming week.

The leadership class and Student Government have done a lot for the school already, they do not plan on slowing down anytime soon. Student government plans to recognize veterans around the school during the month of November. Students will also get the opportunity to recognize veterans in their own families. Student government has also gotten a Winter Formal dance approved recently. The dance will be a “Sadie Hawkins” dance, meaning the girls will be asking the guys to be their dates. “I’m very excited for our student body to come together for a dance like this,” Sophomore Melea Humiston said. “I’m interested to see how it’ll work out considering it’s our first time doing it, but I think it’s going to be great.” Students were looking forward to a great year at West Henderson, and the new leadership class has helped make that happen.
