I had high hopes and expectations for the second movie in the “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” series – “P.S., I Still Love You” – and they were not only met, but exceeded.
I expected the newest release to give a little more insight into Peter and Lara Jean’s relationship that had just really begun at the end of the previous movie. Also, given that the release of the teen romance was set just in time for Valentine’s Day, I was hoping that it would add to the spirit of the holiday. I was right in setting the bar high for the second film because it definitely met my expectations and added a twist into the teen romance I never saw coming.
“To All The Boys: P.S., I Still Love You” made its way onto Netflix on Feb.12. Although the characters and setting of the film, as well as the basic storyline, remained the same, this movie still kept me on my toes. The added love interest in John Ambrose, played by Disney star Jordan Fisher, created a tense, twisted love triangle in the new relationship between Peter and Lara Jean. Though the love triangle was a shock, it fit into the story of the original “To All the Boys” seamlessly. This second installment also added insight into the suspiciously normal relationship between Peter and his ex-girlfriend, who also happens to be Lara Jean’s childhood best friend.
The newest movie has all the same appeals that the previous movie had: the relatable teenage journey through love in high school, heartbreak, friends and enemies as well as the popular stars of the movie: Noah Centineo (Peter) and Lana Condor (Lara Jean).
The only aspect of the movie that I found to be a little weird was a certain musical scene in the film. In the scene after Lara Jean’s breakup with Peter, she is seen the following day at school walking down the hallway. The odd part comes when the song that was building in the background becomes more and more prominent and Lara Jean begins to sing the song. This was just a minor detail in the movie that when I watched thought was a little cliche for the movie.
As a whole, “To All the Boys: P.S., I Still Love You” is the perfect follow-up to the original film. If the first TATB appealed to you for the simple high school love story, then you will love the second in the series just as much. Viewers get closure to the cliffhanger that the original film left off at, and they can grow with the characters as they navigate high school and relationship firsts.
