A new dance challenge has emerged and taken over the internet. The “triangle dance” started with a Tik Tok in February 2019.
User Matthew Jones posted a video doing the dance to the song “Milkshake” by Kelis. After gaining nearly a million likes, the internet has since become obsessed with the new three-person challenge.
“I didn’t really know about it, but I was at a volleyball tournament this weekend and I saw so many girls doing it,” sophomore America Anderson said. “It just looked fun so me and two girls from my team decided to try it and we actually got it after a while.”
You need three people for the dance, and you begin by all standing in a triangle with each person’s hands locked on another’s shoulder. Each person has a certain jumping sequence, giving each person a turn jumping in the middle. Each member must be in sync with one another in order to successfully achieve the look of a triangle, so it may take a few tries to get things just right.
The dance has spread across many social media platforms but is most popular on Twitter. The hashtag #triangledance has collected over a million entries on the app and users have continued to post it since February.
Triangle dancing is not the first dance craze to come across the internet and social media and it won’t be the last. This challenge in particular is preceded by the Kiki Challenge and the Mannequin Challenge.
“It was tricky because we (freshman Alyssa Price and sophomore Helene Johnston) kept jumping into each other at the same time, but we got it eventually, and it was really fun to do,” freshman Laurel Jennings said.
