The class of 2022, accompanied by their parents, filled the gymnasium with nervous chatter as they awaited their first glimpse of their home for the next four years. The room was filled with the clicks of students typing out messages to their friends, hoping to see familiar faces in an unfamiliar place. A hush spread over the crowd as student body president Moriah Fender began to give her welcome speech.
August 23 marked four days until the start of the 2018-19 school year, and freshman orientation for the new students at West Henderson High School.
Instead of the usual speech given by the principal about the rules of the school, Fender decided to completely transform freshman orientation. For their introduction, student government members flooded through the bleachers and into a lap of half the length of the gymnasium.
The sudden entrance of student government surprised new students and parents, along with the alma mater scavenger hunt and meeting of upperclassmen teachers.
Students split into groups and toured the school through a hunt for all of the lyrics to the alma mater, and learned about all of the clubs and sports, along with rules such as the dress code.
It was a successful day with the new falcons. New and returning students alike were looking forward to and feeling positively about the school year ahead, with the first day of school on August 27.
