As many of you probably know, we here at West have started something big. It’s a thing that I like to call the Dirty Birds.
This season we have epito-mized what a student section should really be: borderline offensive and always rowdy. This could possibly be the greatest thing that has ever happened at West.
Whether it be the always stellar “I believe that we will win” chant or the classic “Lets go Falcons” chant, we have embodied what a student section should be.
The idea escalated from a simple “what if?” conversation at lunch to something very much real. We sold more than 100 shirts to create the unity.
The Dirty Bird season started out with a bang against Hendersonville. We let the other schools know what’s up at West.
The other schools have the “Goon Squad” at East and the “Spandex Squad” at North for volleyball, but here at West, the Dirty Birds are on such a higher level than them.
Our spirit has elevated this year far beyond that of other schools. At sporting events, North always feels like they have to have a “blackout” or a “whiteout.” I mean seriously?
Come up with some new ideas. It is really getting old. You can’t even compare to a whole section of Dirty Birds who are ready to throw down.
After going to the West game at Hendersonville, I was actually extremely unimpressed by their effort in their student section.
They tried the “Silent Night” approach which is basically when everyone is quiet until the 10th point is scored. Afterwards, everyone in the student section goes crazy. While it may have been a good idea, it ended up being super boring.
It took almost the whole first quarter before they scored 10 points. I felt like I was about to fall asleep. Plus, we got to 10 points before they did. Congratulations, you are still losing.
Even after this, they were still extremely quiet. They were depending on the fact that the “Silent Night” would be the greatest idea ever, but I was far from impressed. They hardly did any chants afterwards.
One of the signature ideas that we have at West is during the free throws. We “Give them the bird.” But not in a traditional sense of using the middle finger, of course. We simply join our hands together at the thumbs, forming a bird that we hold up while we are shooting free throws.
By far, I have been thoroughly impressed by the support and involvement this year through the Dirty Birds student section.
We have started something new, something fresh. We have become a force to be reckoned with. Henderson County’s public high school student sections will never be the same. Remember, stay dirty, my friends. Dirty Birds for life.
