After one of the most impressive comeback seasons in West history last fall, the Falcons proved they were no “one hit wonder” in Friday’s 34-7 pounding of the Madison Patriots at Johnson field.
The Falcons ran for 277 yards in the first half alone and held the Patriots to only one touchdown in the last 6 seconds of the game.
“With the media against us, ranking us so low in preseason, you had to play with a sense of urgency and a chip on your shoulder,” senior defensive end Davis Fisher said. “We had to prove ourselves and our fans that we are better than what the newspaper says we are.”
On defense, Fisher’s name kept coming up on the loud speakers as he recorded four sacks. The Falcon defensive unit only allowed two first downs in the first half.
Senior fullback Tanner Bullock led the team offensively with 107 of the 277 first-half yards. Senior fullback Josh Penland, junior quarterback Brandon Whitaker and senior halfback James Murray all scored touchdowns, Whitaker’s coming from a quarterback scramble. Junior Peyton Frisbee scored twice in his first game as a varsity player.
West has an away game this Friday against the Hendersonville Bearcats, a team the Falcons haven’t beaten since 2007.
