JV football wins conference championship

With Monday’s win over Tuscola the JV West Henderson football team are officially conference champions. The Falcons won the game with a score of 14-7.

The game started off fast with the falcons forcing a quick turnover. Soon after that Sophomore Devrey Hernandez ran 52 yards for a touchdown. After the quick score, there was not another touchdown until the end of the 2nd quarter when Tuscola threw a touchdown pass. At the half Tuscola was leading 7-6.

The 2nd half was more of the same. The game was going back and forth, stop after stop. The Falcons drove all the way down the field late in the 3rd, but then got stopped on 4th down. On the play starting quarterback Jackson Lynn got injured and could not return to the game.

At the start of the 4th the Falcons had their back against the wall. Starting quarterback out, as well as injuries to multiple other positions. With 2 minutes left Tuscola had the ball inside the 20 yard line. On 2nd down Tuscola fumbled a handoff and Sophomore Cameron Banks recovered it for West.

With one more chance to win the game, freshman backup quarterback Jude Lyda came out to lead the drive. Lyda was able to connect with multiple receivers while driving down the field. Then with 30 seconds remaining Lyda hit a wide open with Gavin Russell for the go ahead touchdown. On the final play of the game Tuscola threw up one more pass to the end zone, and it was picked off by freshman Diego Castro, his 2nd interception of the game.

As the game clock hit 0, the crowd went crazy and the whole team stormed the field to celebrate. After a short but hard fought season, the JV falcons were conference champions.
